On 22nd April, 1917, the 1st East Kent (Buffs)of 16 Brigade, 6th Division moved into the front line trenches at Loos, the day before the Second Battle of the Scarpe began just a few mile to the south. When the fighting associated with this battle commenced at 4.45am on 23rd April, there was, not unnaturally, a marked increase in artillery fire by both sides. The trenches at Loos were not spared and it was this shell fire that accounted for the death of Alfred Harper.
